DSDN 101 - Group Assignment Two

Advertisement for KASI SportsWare:

https://vimeo.com/43087934

We, (Chris,Emma and Clara) had the task of creating a company slogan to sell sportswear and promote our brand name KASI. We had come together and brainstorm ideas that would best suit our company, its the brand that we are trying to sell.

As we are a sports merchandise company, the intention of our advertisement is to 'sell' the idea that KASI caters to a wide variety of sports, people and sportswear. Keeping this in mind, we needed to think of engaging and original ideas that we thought would best draw our customers in.

Our aim was to keep the ideas pretty much the same as our first group project to keep the consistency when it came down to making the 15second advertisement. This involved keeping a theme of black and white and having some kind of sports equipment as our main focus, so it was clear what exactly it was we were trying to sell.

Our Sports Ware Merchandise Company KASI provides to all audiences and caters to a variety of different sports. Our advertisement displays this appropriately given the time we had to do it in and the amount of group time we had together.

Brainstorm

The Clip

Brainstorm

I explored the Narrative and Ideas to my discipline (Industrial Design) by branching them out further and added quotes that relates to what I want to get across to my audience.

Experimental Stop Motion Test

In this short Stop Motion Video I wanted to show the general idea that I was exploring in doing for my Clip. It starts off as a common standard white cube and then transforms into something personal through the drawings they had made on it as its owner develops a personal attachment to it.

Research

Inspiring Storyboard

I like how this storyboard creates an atmosphere through the use of techniques such as zooming in.

Research

Inspiring Stop Motion Video

I like this video as it is creative and unique. I would like to show a similar technique in my own animation.

Precedents

Twisting Building
I really like this image as it is a very unconfentional shape, as it is twisting upwards. I wanted to show this twisting motion in my model.

Tree Shape
This image was from project 1 and I wanted to bring in this circular motion to my model.

Original Model
This is the model I have decided on to develop.

Sketch Models
Experimented with different ways to do the twisting tail. I also experimented with the top design.

Curatorial

Design Critique:

My first precedent image is of straight angular lines and my second of curvilinear lines. There is symmetry present within my first precedent and asymmetry in my second thus creating juxtaposition between the two. I showed this in the model by using symmetry through the middle (length-wise) and asymmetry when viewed from the side. This gives the model an organized and uniformed look that relates back to Neo-Classical design, whilst showing a carefree perspective through asymmetry from the French Rococo period. Three-dimensional perspectives are included in my precedents through using overlapping layers. I interpreted this into the model by bunching up three curves, making it hard to see through at the bottom, but showing the transparency of the material at the top where the curves are most prominent. Making the sharp and blunt curves from my precedent a dominant feature to fully express the fluidity of the design and how your eyes follow through the design instantly without effort. Although curves are the dominant part of the model, it would lose effectiveness without the contrasting straight lines that connect my model in unity and balance. A quote spoken by William McCall, “Straight is the line of duty, curved is the line of beauty; Follow the straight line, thou shalt see the curved line ever follow thee”. He speaks of how curved lines create the beauty and essence of an object, but can only be expressed through having a straight line present to unify a design or object, which I have done so with the model.

Flash Animations

First Test:

Getting use to using flash and making a short general animation to what I want to show.

Close Final

Including sound to animation and I feel that by adding in a glow filter it communicates my word better to its audience.

Final Animation:

This is my complete animation of my One Word Film. This final animation has the same basic concept from my brainstorm storyboard, but is different to my storyboard as I had decided to include a glow filter as seen in my close final. I really believe that the sound makes my animation effective. However it also brings across the essence of my word without sound just as well. The ending that I had decided on this final animation I believe brings the whole animation together making it very effective.

One Word Film - Final Storyboards

Final 3 Storyboards:

I developed these 3 storyboards from 3 of my brainstorm ideas.

Snake:

I chose to use snake as 1 of my final words as i really liked the idea of using a classic old game and creating something new from it. I used the letter of my word to create the snake itself and as the animation continues the letters are collected along the way and attaches to the tail of the snake to create the word. I also thought that this word holds a lot of room for development, especially with the font.

Glue:

I really liked the idea of making having the words stretching and stick together so I decided to use the word Glue as 1 of my final storyboard ideas. There is also area for me to play around with this word further through developing the fonts and the directions that the letters enter in the stage.

Light:

The word Light provided me with room to explore different ways to express the essence of the word. I liked the idea of using negative space to show the word, as this is more effective. I chose to do this word for my final animation because I know that if I communicate the word Light across right the animation will be very effective.

One Word Film - Storyboards

Brainstorm Mini Storyboards

I brainstormed 8 mini storyboards on words that I word could possibly use for my final.

Kerning

Original Letters Rearranged:

In the first image we worked with san-serif and serif fonts to test out how different kerning spacings effects the different fonts. Starting out with very small kerning spacing between the letters at the top of the page and ending with bigger kerning spaces at the bottom of the page. The serif font looks best with medium kerning spaces, as it is the easiest to read. The san-serif font looks most effective with small kerning spaces, as it draws your eye in more and this makes it easier to read rather than having bigger gaps between the letters where nothing draws your attention to the next letter and so on.

Hatching in Kerning Spaces:

Using tracing paper we hatched in the gaps between the letters to show the how kerning influences the way we perceive and read a word. The shape and width of a letter influences how far away the letters are from each other to create even kerning spaces, so that the word is easier to read.
